Do you know the relationship of balanced nutrition, blood sugar control, and weight wellness?

Maintaining a balanced nutrition plays a key role in blood sugar control. Blood sugar is the concentration of glucose found in your blood. Your body needs sugar, but both too much and too little can have detrimental effects on your health. Let’s take a closer look at how balanced nutrition can aid in blood sugar control.

We need sugar but not too much and in the right forms.

Glucose is essential in our diet and our bloodstream. It is an important energy source in our body. After eating, glucose is stored in the bloodstream and travels to the cells in the body where it will be converted into needed energy, aided by insulin which is created in the pancreas.

When you overconsume glucose, the body will store it in the liver or muscles, or change it into fat for later use, but you can only store so much. On the flip side, if you do not get enough glucose, your body will not be able to function properly. The challenge is to find healthy sources of sugar and carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates turn into sugar when consumed making it an important part of weight wellness to understand the right foods to eat. Too much sugar and your body spikes and crashes, making you feel sluggish, but foods like sweet potatoes, berries, and other macronutrients will fuel and keep you feeling energized. The reason is that these carbs take longer to burn that sugary drinks, candy, and foods like bread, white rice, and white potatoes.

Weight wellness is all about balance.

The key to weight wellness is balance and that includes blood sugar. Glucose levels need to stay consistent because when they spike and drop, you may experience irritability, headaches, and lack of clarity of thought.

When blood sugar spikes, you experience hyperglycemia. When blood sugar drops, this is called hypoglycemia. When your body is unable to control glucose levels on its own, it can lead to hyperglycemia, also called high blood sugar, or hypoglycemia also called low blood sugar. When there is an excess of sugar stored in the body and it isn’t managed by the body with our own insulin, it is called insulin resistance; this condition can develop into diabetes if not treated with food, exercise, and, for some, medication.

We aren’t doctors and we don’t even play them on television so please check with your physician if you are experiencing sugar or other health issues.
